This course was designed by Ken Brown, former Ryder Cup player, together with Martin Gillett, the Essex based golf course architect who contributed to over thirty of the best courses of the new wave of developments in the early 90's - including supervising the construction of the prestigious recent South Course at Wentworth- Martin has established a reputation for the naturalness of his layouts. In essence the Brown Gillett design steers clear of blind holes and random unfair penalties in favour of a more honest and open test that challenges golfers of all abilities. Straight hitting brings its own reward.

The traditional British type of course is set perfectly into the rolling Hertfordshire parkland and makes full use of this 170 acre parkland terrain. Part of its popularity is established by the fact that when people visit the site they feel that they are taking a step beyond the ordinary.

The site engenders a peaceful atmosphere which, despite its proximity to Harpenden, gives one a feeling of being away from every day hustle and bustle. This feeling is partly created by the many areas of mature woodland and parkland which are home to some magnificent Oaks, Limes, Hornbeams and a specimen Wellingtonia. These trees, set in the naturally undulating countryside, give the course maturity and visual beauty.
