Royal Ashdown GC is a club which boasts two excellent courses within its grounds, both unique in their styles, but consistent in their quality. The West Course was originally only nine holes long but was transformed in 1932 into 18-holes. During this year ladies golf was given Royal status in its own right, and the course chosen to host the English Ladies Championship was awarded to the West Course at Royal Ashdown Forest GC.
Since then many alterations have taken place and the West Course is now a championship course in its own right. The key to a sub-par round at the West Course lies not in the ability to hit the ball far, but the ability to control and shape your shots. You must be accurate around this woodland course if you are to navigate form tee to green successfully.
The 8th hole is a perfect characterisation of what the West Course is all about. A par-4 of only 270-yards it is drivable if you’re capable of that length. However, huge trees stretch for the duration of the hole down the left, so you must be accurate. The green slopes left to right and then drops further to the right at the front edge. If this is too easy then a slope prior to the putting surface will get you thinking as well.
The club opened its clubhouse again in 2004 after a short refurbishment, but it has lost none of its original Victorian charm. It sports views overlooking the 18th green of the West Course and the forest where the course resides.
