Situated on the rural-urban fringe of Leicester, Glen Gorse is a mature parkland course that’s considered to be one of the most exacting tests of golf in the midlands.

The long avenue-like fairways, narrow greens and strategically placed trees reward straight hitting and those that achieve this for a full 18-holes are going to be in good shape come the count-back.

The last three holes are especially tough and have earned a reputation collectively as the finest finish in the country. All are long and the 17th and 18th are 450 yard par-4s.

You’ll also have to navigate your way carefully through six and seven so as to avoid the six ponds that come into play.

A local favourite here is the fifth, a long downhill par-5. Get it right off the tee and your ball will run and run, especially on a dry day, leaving a real birdie opportunity.

After your round enjoy the sunshine on the patio overlooking the 18th green or, if its not so pleasant, you can demonstrate your all-round sporting prowess with a frame of snooker.
