Blackburn
golf course is a parkland course with superb views of the Lancashire coast
and Pennine Hills. The club was founded in 1894 at the height of Blackburn's
power as a cotton and engineering town. The driving force was Walter Stirrup,
who wrote in the Diamond Jubilee Handbook of 1954:
"Below me lay a green, wide and pleasant land, so lovely and intimate,
so endearing, as to awaken in my heart a real warm and abiding affection.
The scene was an invitation: it was just the place where people could
find a healthy and refreshing change from the toil and strife of daily
life."
Set amongst rolling hills, the parkland course boasts immaculately manicured
greens and lush fairways, offering a true test to any level of golfer.
Vast improvements over the intervening years include new drainage, maturing
trees and new bunkers.
