Golf has seen a significant change in recent years as regards the physical condition of tour players. It’s safe to say that we will probably never again see the likes of a Russell Claydon-sized player leading the money list on either sideof the Atlantic.

Nowadays, professionals like to keep themselves in peak physical condition and with good reason.

If a top tour pro is not out on the course or on the range, you can bet your bottom dollar he or she will either be in the gym or receiving some sort of physiotherapy. They say Tiger Woods spends as much time refining his body as he does his short game, such is the importance he places on his well-being.

Golfers have for many years been called sportsmen, now, however, they are being labelled athletes. And it’s not just golfers in the professional ranks that are keeping a watchful eye on their bodies — the average club player is rightly getting in on the act.

There is so much literature on the importance of health and well-being and it is relevant to all golfers. From sorting out that aching back to keeping free of injury through proper warm-up routines, there are companies out there which can point you in the right direction or offer advice on curing particular ailments.

Health clubs are now affordable to all thanks to the recent boom in the leisure industry. And, with some health clubs blessed with an adjoining golf course, golfers can enjoy their 18 holes and have a bite to eat before burning off the calories in the gym.

Remember, good health is not just about curing your body’s aches and pains; it is about giving your body the best possible chance of staying injury-free.

In sustaining such health programmes your body and mind will not be the only beneficiary, your game will be thankful too.
