Officially recognised as the tenth oldest golf club in the world, golf has been played at Burntisland since 1797. Perched high above the sea, the original parkland layout was designed by Old Tom Morris, redesigned by two-time British Open Champion, Willie Park Junior, and later revised by James Braid in 1922. Overlooking the historic town of Burntisland, panoramic views over the Firth of Forth and towards the Forth Bridges are a constant companion on a clear day. At 5,993 yards long, the challenge at Burntisland comes in the form of precision rather than power. Though fairways are generous, accurate approach play is the priority in order to score low on subtly undulating greens often guarded by well-placed bunkers. Short par-4s may tempt the longer hitters, though canny play is more often rewarded. Many a score has fallen victim to the abandoned industrial quarries incorporated as daunting hazards along the 11th, 12th and 16th holes. The traditional clubhouse is the perfect place to unwind after 18 holes. A genuinely warm welcome is extended by the clubmaster and a fresh ‘Light Lunch’ menu with daily specials is sure to satisfy.
