Looking out to sea at Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Course

Fortrose & Rosemarkie is a typical yet unique Scottish Links course, typical because it's design used the natural contours of the land and unique because it is almost encircled by the sea. Although the course in its present form has only been in existence since 1937 when Mr. James Braid was consulted in order to re-design the layout, golf has been played at chanonry point since the club was founded in 1888. There is however documentary evidence that golf has been played on the "Links of Fortrose" as far back as 1702.

Fortrose links from the airThe chanonry Peninsula offers links golf at its finest, there are sea and mountain views from every tee, fairway and green, other visual delights are the regular sighting of the resient school of bottle nosed dolphins which show off their aquatic acrobatic skills often within a five irons length of the first eight fairways. The extraordinary geographical location of chanonry point means that the course is very rarely closed even throughout a highland winter.

At just under 6000 yards the terrain is mildly undulating and ideal for the holiday or senior golfer. The first eight holes follow the shore line with beach or sea awaiting a hooked tee shot, and with whins bordering most of the fairways, accuracy rather than length is the preferred option. The signature hole to the course is generally accepted as the 4th, a 477 yards par 5 offering a two tier fairway with a choice of laying up with the drive or opting for the big one over the top.
