Golf in Alicante

The past decade or so has seen a phenomenal increase in the number of golf courses and golfers in the beautiful, sunny, south coast region of Spain, Alicante, with the effect that it is now one of the most popular regions in the country to play a round or two.

Indeed, it is now challenging its more established neighbours for the title of ‘Top Spanish Golf Destination’ and, if it hasn’t already claimed it, it surely won’t be too long before it does.
It is already home to one of the country’s most famous golf resorts in La Manga, located near the beautiful town of Murcia. A perpetual favourite with footballers and showbiz celebrities alike, La Manga is home to three stunning courses all of which will test each and every aspect of your game to the full. And, should you discover any parts are lacking, you can get them polished and fine-tuned at the resort’s superb golf academy.

Another of the most popular courses in the region is the Seve Ballesteros-designed Oliva Nova. It can be found just outside the modern, cosmopolitan city of Denia. The course is a spectacular mixture of long, luscious fairways, fast but fair greens and sensational sea views. Some bold observers have even called it Seve’s finest achievement in golf!

Las Ramblas is also worthy of mention. It is a terrific undulating course that covers a wide variety of terrain. From imposing trees to barren rocky outcrops, you’ll be forced to play all different kinds of golf, from target-shooting to precision-play, to score well here.

Villamartin, meantime, is rightly considered one of the best courses in the region and is a former host of the Spanish Open. Proof, therefore, of its prowess. If you play it, you’ll enjoy possibly the most luxurious setting you’ll ever play golf in – this is every inch the millionaire’s playground you see!

Other courses of note in Alicante include El Saler, Escorpion, El Plantio and Campoamor, the latter having only opened in 1989 based upon extensive and intelligent designs by Carmelo Gracias Casselles.

As you can see, therefore, there are already plenty of fantastic places in Alicante to enjoy your golf. And with the promise of even more on the way – construction work on new courses is taking place left, right and centre in the region – it surely won’t be long before Alicante is considered Spain’s premier golfing destination.
