Golf
in Ibiza
It’s more or less impossible to think of Ibiza without thinking of a party lifestyle. The Balearic island off the east coast of Spain is descended upon by thousands of people in search of a good time every year. Soon, however, the good time being sought could change from a music-related one to a golf-orientated one.
Ibiza, you see, is a hit with golf-mad holidaymakers, in spite of the fact that it only has two courses, one of which has just nine holes.
Irrespective of this, golf has cemented its place as one of the most popular pastimes on the island and, with more courses in the offing, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is going to get even more popular as time goes on.
The 18-hole tract is, as you might rightly expect, something pretty special. Simply called the Ibiza Golf Course, it is far from your standard laissez-faire holiday fare; it has plenty to tempt and tease golfers of all levels and handicaps.
It is located on the east of the island and only about seven kilometres from Ibiza Town, in the Santa Eularia region. Its opening in 1991 caused much excitement amongst locals and tourists alike and, in the intervening 15 years, it has been lovingly developed and conditioned such that it is now a top quality, challenging course.
Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it enjoys a preferential setting that is virtually impossible to resist. You’ll go simply wild for the views that are afforded from each fairway.
It has a fine range of on-site facilities so there is plenty to keep you occupied after your round. And, if you’ve still got it in you to play another nine holes, well, the island’s other course – the nine-hole Roca Llisa Golf Course – is no more than a pitching wedge away.
Its tranquil setting also offers beautiful sea views and the fairways are fringed by tall pine tree groves. Pleasantly, it is a fairly flat, level course with broad fairways, so if you’re errant on the tee then it’s no great tragedy. However, the greens play fast and true so your putter will need to be on fire for you to score well.
It surely won’t be long before these courses are joined by more top golfing tracts and, when they are, it will surely only be to the benefit of Ibiza’s blossoming golfing reputation. |
