With its climate, its culture and its courses, it was inevitable from the outset that Spain should become a top golfing destination.

Tens of thousands of eager holidaymakers flock to the country every year, principally to enjoy the very best that it is has to offer in terms of golf – and we’d be mighty surprised if any of them left disappointed.

Spain, you see, has a long and distinguished association with the sport. A look at the list of famous players it has produced down through the years promotes that fact. Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Sergio Garcia are just some of the Spanish players who have made their mark on the world stage.

It’s no surprise that the country should have produced players of such talent either, not when you consider the courses they had to cut their golfing teeth on.

From the Costas to the islands, Spain is teeming with courses that will relentlessly tempt you to tee it up.

One of the most famous courses in the country is, without question, Valderrama. The venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup – where a Ballesteros-led Europe retained the trophy – it is one of golf’s truly great courses. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones and truly has to be seen to be believed. It’s that good.

The nearby Sotogrande was also designed by Trent Jones and is every bit as formidable as its neighbour. Inaugurated in 1964, it is a naturally beautiful course which benefits from great sea views.

San Roque is another of the country’s top courses. The host of Final Qualifying for the European Tour, the Dave Thomas-designed Old Course is a considerable test of golf for even the lowest handicappers – as dozens of unfortunate Tour pros prove every November!
Also worthy of a mention are the two courses at Mijas. Both are set up to test the very best in the game and have challenges aplenty waiting at just about every single twist and turn.

But these are just a mere selection of the best courses that you’ll find in the country; there are literally hundreds more for you to consider. Whether you head for the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Costa Brava, Costa Dorada or even the Balearics, you won’t be short of choice for great golfing fun in Spain.
