Golf in Geneva

The majestic mountain vistas and incredible tranquil setting make sure that Switzerland is everything but your ordinary run-of-the-mill European golf destination.

On the contrary, there is something visually appealing about golf in this part of the world that you can’t quite find elsewhere. And, better still, it’s closer by plane than Spain or Portugal, with a flight time of around two hours. It is also not too expensive for a week’s golf at a championship venue and relatively good class accommodation. In fact, if you get an experienced golf tour operator on the case for you and your party you should be able to rustle up a few good deals to choose from.

Switzerland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, so don’t expect to run your golf trip on a tight budget. But that doesn’t mean you have to scrimp and save.

There are about 60 golf courses in Switzerland and some of the best are in Geneva. The area’s mountain and lake settings makes for some quite sensational settings, none more inspiring than Crans-sur-Sierre in Crans Montana, venue for the European Tour’s Omega European Masters. The course is, quite possibly, the most spectacular tournament venue in the world. But, be warned, it is closed for a couple of months a year to save itself from excessive snow damage and harsh weather conditions.

Geneva Country Club, in Bellevue, is a fantastic challenge and particularly noted for its deep bunkers and lush green fairways. Meanwhile, the ever-popular Golf Club de Geneva is no less a fitting venue to experience the very best of golf in Geneva. It has every reason to be one of the most frequented venues in the country as it is a fine test of golf. As an added bonus, it’s isn’t too expensive and you can, at times, pick up the odd reduced green fee – but you need to go looking for it.
A good tip if you are heading this way is relatively uncrowded for golf despite the upsurge in popularity. This, of course, is all thanks to the affluent and cosmopolitan population of Geneva, who started building golf courses in the 1920s and who now provide a reliable weekend market to sustain them.
