Kirkistown Castle Golf Club was formed in 1902. The course was extended in 1929 to meet the needs of an increased membership and the large number of visitors to the course. The new layout was over the original nine hole course but embracing considerably more ground and consisting of two loops of nine holes, each beginning and ending at the clubhouse.

The bunkering of the new course was carried out by James Braid, one of Golf's "all time greats". On arrival the great man was heard to exclaim "If only I had this within fifty miles of London". A wooden pavilion served as clubhouse then until replaced in 1936 by a more substantial building. The Club Professional was Mr R J Polley (Bertie), a position held for more than forty years until his retirement in 1974.

This fine old links course, designed by the legendary course architect Jim Braid on the coast of County Down has a tremendous variety of holes. The long 397 metre, par 4 10th plays like a par 5 when into the wind. A true and fair test of golf catering for low and high handicappers alike. You will find a warm and friendly atmosphere in the clubhouse. This course dries so quickly after bad weather that it is usually open when other courses are closed.
