Until a couple of years ago Torwoodlee's course was a sleepy tree-gladed dell that Sunday golfers enjoyed for its lush quality of fairways and greens and the magnificent trees that broached most holes. Now, with an additional layout making it the full 18, it's a course of two very different flavours.

The opening three holes play over the original land until the 4th opens out onto some fine border hillside. It is a steady progression up to an inspiring viewpoint before the course zig-zags back to the valley floor. At the 5th you have the challenge of the course's trickiest test taking you to the zenith of the course. It is a long par 5 covering the slope to a ledge-like green. The double-trouble of playing uphill with long reaches for your fairway shots makes this a hole for your best strokes.

There's a double green at the 7th and 13th. The par 4, 11th is a difficult dogleg. Then it's back into the trees to a fine finish alongside the River Gala. The club offers some good day packages including lunch and 36 holes.
