Out on the green at Girvan Golf Course

Girvan Golf Course shares the same stunning views towards Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde as its more illustrious neighbor Turnberry The course was designed by James Braid and has had few alterations since its inception in 1902. Both Turnberry and Girvan were amended during the war when much of their land was given over to potato planting. Their recovery was well achieved and although not of championship standard, Girvan provides a golfing test of considerable charm and aesthetic pleasure.

A view of the sea at GirvanThe exposed first eight holes are pure Scottish links, immediately adjacent to the beach, and the second ten holes are parkland providing a variable challenge. This latter part has the interest of the river, from which the town takes its name, winding through the fairways to its final destination in the Firth of Clyde. Care should be taken on the ninth tee. This hole is named after the gentleman who stepped back to admire a good drive only to take an unscheduled dip in the Girvan.

A strong feature of this course is the long par threes, all usually exacerbated by the prevailing SW wind. There are four par 3's on the front nine and four on the back, if you don't score well on these then your score is wrecked. If you score well on Girvan then you have played very well indeed.
