Situated in a sublime location on the beautiful shores of the whisky island of Islay, the Machrie is as traditional and unspoilt a links as any purist could hope to discover.

This 6324 yard classic, designed by Willie Campbell in 1891, is part of a self contained complex fronted by a well-appointed 16 bedroom hotel with 15 self-catering cottages also available. The course, famed for its bund holes, remains relatively unchanged since its inception, although it was partially re-routed by Donald Steele in 1978.

Recent upgrades have seen several new tees taking shape, but an overall refusal to spoil the natural aspect of the links will ensure it remains a pilgrimage which should be undertaken by all true connoisseurs of the game. Unfortunately only accessible through the good grace of the timetables according to Caledonian MacBrayne and Loganair, the apparent isolation only makes a visit to the Machrie even more memorable once you get there.
