BJust outside the highly popular, Ayrshire, seaside resort of Largs - a massive attraction for tourists - is Routenburn golf club, a busy public course with a famous history. It was here that Sam Torrance was said to have risen through the ranks as a junior golfer under the counsel and guidance of his father Bob, the club's long-standing and since retired professional.

Not the easiest of courses on the legs, the views from its steepest parts more than make up for the effort that certain holes, particularly the third, command. The spectacular sights over the town below and the Isle of Cumbrae make your exertions worthwhile. Watch out for the thick rough on the side of the fairways, which belies the club's heathland setting.
